Why does the A/C Quit Working?

Did you know that there are several reasons for your A/C Unit to Quit and give up on you? According to Energy Star, up to 80% of All Air Conditioning and Heat Pump issues or problems could be avoided if the problem were corrected in a timely manner. The reasons may surprise you but we have found that most often it comes down to some of the same old stories:

Low Levels of Refrigerant

This problem can lead to so many issues that we receive calls on:

Frozen Evaporator Coils

Usually a Frozen Evaporator coil is caused by lack of airflow. If you have poor airflow, then when time goes on and the problem isn’t addressed, the lack of airflow will cause the coil to freeze up. Ice on the Evaporator Coil starts to form until the unit is completed seized up and entirely frozen over. With regular maintenance like changing your air filter, keeping your fan running and changing the speeds, also checking refrigerant levels and inspecting the condensation drain. This will help the units evaporator coil from freezing

Unchanged Filters/Filthy Dirty Filters

When you let your filter work beyond its useful life you are making your unit work less efficient and putting strain on the HVAC Unit. Dirt and Dust are the enemies of efficiency – Texas A&M– did a study and it showed that 1/8 of 1 inch of dirt accumulated on the blower wheel reduced the air flow by 30%, significantly lowering the efficiency of the unit.

If You subscribe to our Club Membership, you will receive 2 annual cleanings and inspections. This will help elmiminate a serious breakdown

An Old Thermostat

A Thermostat is one of the most important items in your HVAC System. A malfunctioning or out of date thermostat can lead to problems for your entire system. If you have a programmable thermostat and it is dark – check the batteries to see if that is the culprit. If this is not the case it could be a blown fuse in your breaker panel. If you decide to go further with your investigation, please ensure that the breaker panel switch is turned to the off position to ensure you do not receive an electrical shock. Proceed to removing the cover and use a soft brush to remove any dirt. See if there is loose wiring or maybe the screws need to be tightened, if there are wires that look to be damaged or worn replacing the thermostat should be your next move. An upgraded Thermostat can solve alot of problems

Parts Stress and Breakdowns

There are many moving parts that make your HVAC System Run Smoothly. Without proper maintence you system runs the risk of a costly breakdown.

Clogged Condensing Units

You’re A/C condenser is the part of an air conditioning unit that is actually cooling down
and condensing the refrigerant gas into a liquid state. There are many parts to a condenser,
fans, tubes, condenser coil, a circuit board and a compressor. If you’re A/C is about to go
out on you there are a couple of warning signs

  1. Loud or weird sounds coming from the unit itself
  2. A very noticeable reduction of cooling from the Unit
  3. There is fluid leaking past the normal amount of condensation specialists can help with the installation process.

Are your Drains Clogged?

If you have a clogged drain line, eventually you will have too much humidity inside of your home which can lead to mold. Water standing in and around an AC unit can lead to rust.

Short - Cycles

An issue we see with AC units is short-cycling, this happens when an A/C Unit turns off and on prematurely. This problem is generally caused by:

Musky or Moldy Smells

Do you have mold, mildew, or musky smells in your house? You could have a problem with the level of humidity inside your home. This can lead to respitory problems and illnesses. We can help fix this problem by:

Pools of Water

Clogged A/C Drains can cause a lot of problems with your home. If your unit is in the ceiling this can go unnoticed for a long period of time and create quite a bit of damage. Water stains in the ceiling or musky, moldy air can be a leading indicator of a problem

Stale Air

Stale and moldy air is often the result of AC problems. A recurring cause of musty odors is undrained water in the drain pans and airducts, this will create mold and mildew.

Wierd or strange Noises

Loud or banging noises from the unit is telling you that something is wrong with your system. It could be something minor like a problem with your compressor or a loose belt. Whatever the noise let us check it out and correct what is wrong.

High Utility Bills

When you run the Air Conditioner it uses alot of electricity. When its hot outside you want to be cool but that older unit could be costing you alot of money. If you have an old AC unit, it may be wearing out and not up to date in regards to effeciency. There are also other things that can cause the unit to run up the bill on you like leaks in your ductwork, an A/C unit that needs charged or simply a dirty filter.
